FYI
From Cynthia Ford –
Dear Fellow Homeschoolers,
I am excited to offer the following classes. They are designed to help you give your homeschooled high schooler a top-notch education that is Christ-centered and will help them fulfill the plans that God has in store for them. I have been a teacher for over 25 years in both the public and private sector and have homeschooled my own children. I love teaching, but more than that I love seeing that “aha” moment in a student when school becomes a place where learning is loved and a concept is not just memorized, but understood. Let me help you help your child be all that God wants him to be!
Schedule of classes for the Fall / Spring 2012 – 2013 year.
Tuesday / Thursday Classes: (Students are required to come both days)
September 11, 2012 – May 28, 2013
8:30 -10:00 am- American History/Government/Literature (3 High School Credits) – This course is the prerequisite to an AP History course that will be taught next year. Included in this course will be the reading of American Literature, as well as writing composition requirements. Students will be required to come to two days of class and then finish the work on the other three days at home. (See below for the textbook requirements and more information)
10:00 -11:00 am – Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 (1 High School Credit)- As an experienced math teacher, I can help your child get through this unpopular subject. Understanding and doing well in Algebra is the key to understanding and doing well in high school science courses.
11:00 am -12:00 pm – Algebra 2 (1 High School Credit)- A course that will prepare your child to do well on the math portion of the SAT.
American History/Government/Literature –
This is a high school level course and will include papers, oral reports and reading. A student , regardless of age, is eligible to receive high school credit as long as the work is complete and done well. If requirements are met and satisfactory grades are maintained throughout the year, the student will receive not only 1 High School credit for American History, but 1 credit for English (Literature, Writing and Composition) and 1 credit for Bible. Therefore, if a 7th or 8th grader would like to take the course, they can either do it and receive high school credits, or they can choose to do less of the work and not receive the credit. (Hence, they would do fewer papers, oral reports and their tests would be on a lower level) Which ever one you choose, just indicate it on the registration form. Please note that only high school credits can be placed on your transcript and colleges only recognize courses that are on that transcript.
The textbook and literature books needed for this course are as follows:
Exploring America Volume 1 & 2 by Ray Notgrass
- The Scarlet Letter (Nathaniel Hawthorne)
- Narrative of the Life of David Crockett (David Crockett)
- Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (Frederick Douglass)
- Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Harriet Beecher Stowe)
- Company Aytch (Sam Watkins)
- Little Women (Louisa May Alcott)
- Humorous Stories and Sketches (Mark Twain)
- In His Steps (Charles Sheldon)
- Up From Slavery (Booker T. Washington)
- Mama’s Bank Account (Kathryn Forbes)
- Christy (Catherine Marshall)
- To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
Since my daughter is college bound, this course is going to be taught as a prerequisite to the *AP United States History course which I am planning to teach in the fall of 2013.
*AP courses are given to help students pass an AP (Advanced Placement) exam so that they may receive College Credit. There are also CLEP exams, but the AP are more widely excepted by colleges. Also, you can just take any AP exam without doing coursework. However, if it is done that way, you may NOT indicate on your transcripts that an AP course was completed. Completing an AP course and taking the exam helps students win scholarships and get into many different colleges.
Pre-Algebra/Algebra
The textbook needed for this course is as follows:
If the student is taking Pre-Algebra: Math-U-See Pre Algebra
If the student is enrolling in the Algebra course: Math-U-See Algebra
This will be taught in the form of a math lab. Since many students have different areas they struggle with in Algebra, a group lesson will be taught, and then individual attention given. If you don’t know which book your child is ready for, there is a placement test that they can take online through Math-U-See.
Algebra 2
The textbook needed for this course is as follows:
Math-U-See Algebra 2
An explanation why I have chosen to use the Math-U-See Curriculum:
I have taught math to homeschool students, as well as public school students, for over 20 years. I have used Saxon, Teaching Textbooks and Math-U-See. All have their pros and cons. Math-U-See is a mastery approach while the other two use a spiral approach. The latter approach touches on concepts, leaves them before the child fully grasps them and then goes back to them later on. The mastery approach teaches the child to master a concept before moving on. Neither is better, it is just a different way of learning. However, for any curriculum this fact holds true – if a parent doesn’t understand math or has a “math phobia”, often times the child does.
With my method of teaching, I try and give the student a reason to learn math and, through my years of experience, can pick out problem areas and create a more individual plan to help that child succeed. I have a high success rate (Students scoring high on both their SAT and ACT) so if you are struggling to teach your child the higher maths, struggle no more! Let me help your child and thus, help you.
