Computer Science Information
FYI
Please find following some information about some local support available for those interested in pursuing computer careers. Mr. Aker is a former homeschool dad who is interested in helping local students to prepare for the technology field. He is looking to assess interest in the homeschool community. I am attaching some PDFs about different career paths available in Computer Science.
You may to contact him at: les_aker@byeman.com
From Les Aker –
I’m the technology subject matter expert volunteer with the Lowcountry chapter of SCORE, a member of the Beaufort Digital Corridor, and I’m on the advisory board for the Cyber program at TCL. I spent most of my 40+ year Computer Science career working at the Naval Research Laboratory (www.nrl.navy.mil), the US Navy’s corporate research and development facility.
I also manage an online server for the TCL Cyber students where they can ask questions about their careers and coursework. If there is an interest among the parents, it would not be difficult to do the same thing for high school students.

Info from Southern Wesleyan
Good evening, homeschool families,
It is my great honor to contact you this evening. The Southern Wesleyan University School of Education is proud of the work our home school families accomplish daily. We recognize and honor families’ sacrifices to ensure their children receive the highest quality education possible when choosing to home-school their children. We also understand this is not an easy choice, but it is one that we are most proud that we have the right in our respective states and communities to make. We thank God for the rights He has bestowed on us that are enshrined and protected in our nation’s Constitution. We applaud you for working diligently to exercise those rights in providing your children a high-quality education.
As Chair of the School of Education and Music at Southern Wesleyan University, I am deeply grateful for our administration’s conservatism. We strive to honor and protect our students from the machinations of an out-of-control government intent on indoctrination rather than education. We pride ourselves on the fact that our students are taught how to think and not what to think. Our agenda is to provide the highest quality education to produce productive citizens intent on improving our culture from an unashamed Christian worldview.
My mission in contacting homeschool associations today is two-fold:
- I want to engage with you. I served as a public school teacher and district administrator for over 20 years. I came under fire because I dared exercise my First Amendment rights. I fought back and won. As the leader of the School of Education at SWU, it is my mission to provide students with the tools they need to exercise their rights and perpetuate freedom in education. I am seeking to assemble a home school advisory commission for Southern Wesleyan University School of Education and Music. I need you. I need to hear your thoughts, wishes, needs, and desires.
- We want to support you. We understand that parents often need resources to best support their children’s academic needs. Southern Wesleyan University is an institution you can trust. We are an institution that will not attempt to supplant you but empower and support you. To that end, we want to partner with you to provide dual enrollment and college acceleration opportunities for your children where they will engage with professors, not graduate assistants, whose singular desire is to educate, produce excellent citizens, and love your children. We DO NOT indoctrinate. Our approach is an unabashed Christian worldview. Our dual enrollment programs are listed here: https://www.swu.edu/academics/dual-enrollment-courses/. However, we may be able to personalize for your needs. Contact me.
Full transparency: SWU is actively recruiting home school children. Take advantage of this! We know the quality of student you are producing. We love and appreciate the work you have done and are doing.
I am asking home school families to help us revolutionize education in the Southeast. I want to partner with you. I want to support your educational mission for your children. Please contact me by email or phone at the information below. Let’s work together for educational freedom and excellence.
