Civic Literacy Course from HSDLA

FYI Civic Literacy Course from HSDLA

The Home School Legal Defense Association is proud to announce our newest civic literacy course, iCitizen! Developed by Generation Joshua, a department of HSLDA, iCitizen will equip your student with the political and historical knowledge every American needs to be an educated and engaged citizen.

The course highlights the purpose of the Constitution, the structure of America’s government economic system, the role of American diplomacy, expressions of patriotism, and provides an introduction to American parties and politics. Perfect as a half-credit, stand-alone civics course, iCitizen is also excellent preparation for accelerated middle school students, or for freshmen and sophomores planning to take advanced American government courses during their upperclassmen years.

iCitizen provides online testing and opportunities for customization to your family and child’s needs. Included with the course are suggested teaching plans, ranging anywhere from student directed self-study to intensive instructor involvement, with discussion questions, suggested essay topics and supplemental resources.

Here’s what people are saying about iCitizen:

“We highly recommend iCitizen to give your teen a thorough, working knowledge of our system of government and his or her role as a US citizen. The course is a wonderful lead-in to studying American government in depth.”—Diane Kummer, High School Consultant

Don’t miss this opportunity to train your student in responsible American citizenship! Your iCitizenpurchase features 1-year access to all online resources and quizzes for only $40 ($30 for HSLDA members).

Course Description for CBC Crossroads Choir

From Claudia –

Maybe parents would like to consider having their home-schooled children participate in choir for course credit. Pastor Matt has given a description of the choir and as you can see it is not just singing! New members are always welcome–official practice begins on August 29 at 8:00pm.

In addition, the fall school of music program begins September 10th. If you would like more info on choir or music lessons you can call Laura or Pastor Matt at the church office.
CROSSROADS CHOIR:
We rehearse about 40 regular hours over the school year, September to May, on Wednesday nights.  Add in the Saturday and Monday rehearsals for special programs plus performances on Wednesday and Sundays and special out-of-town trips and you easily come to 60 hours plus.

During regular Wednesday rehearsals, we learn new songs and prepare them for performance.  We do this by memorizing the texts and the various choral parts while learning the fundamentals of music theory.  This includes dynamics, key signatures, time signatures, rhythm, harmony and correct singing technique such as pitch, breathing, support, posture, solos, duets and producing the correct vowel sound.  Watching the director and ear-training are some skills vital to this class.  We spend a few moments each class talking about the meaning of the texts and the biblical basis for the songs.  Additionally, we spend time on speech and drama skills as we prepare our skits and readings for the performances.

Spanish Classes Offered

From Kim Swanson –

Spanish classes in Beaufort and Bluffton
My name is Kim Swanson and I have been working with home school students for the past 6 years in both Spanish and Mathematics.  I have my secondary teaching certificate in Math and Spanish, with a Masters in Math, and have taught middle school, high school and college classes for 20 years.
This 2012-2013 school year I will be teaching
Spanish 1 (Bluffton—The Crescent)
Spanish 1 (Beaufort—Community Bible Church)
Spanish 2 (Beaufort and/or Bluffton based on need)
I am flexible on days and times (M-Th 10-2) so I will set them up once I have interested students and find a schedule that works for the majority.
We will use the Navegando textbook series which is a challenging, but outstanding, grammar based curriculum.  In class, we will focus on grammar and communication. The small class size (usually 4-6 students) allows all students to participate and learn to communicate effectively in Spanish.   At home the students will have homework, quizzes and tests to complete and turn in.  All grades will be calculated using Engrade, a free online gradebook that students and parents can view at their convenience.  These classes are best suited for students in 7th grade or higher, adults are more than welcome.  If you are interested in Spanish 2, you must have completed Spanish 1 with me or with an equivalent Spanish curriculum (Rosetta Stone does not count).Cost:  $200 per semester per student (additional sibling– $150 per semester).  This includes the Navegando textbook and workbook.  (Or $45/month plus a one time fee of $25 for books)Classes will start the week of Sept.10th and will finish the week of Dec.10th with breaks for Holidays.  The 2nd half of the classes will be offered starting in January.

If interested or have questions, e-mail krs429@yahoo.com or call 843-757-4122.
