Calls Needed—Bad Bill Threatens Homeschooling

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Your calls and emails are needed to stop a bill that threatens your homeschool freedoms, even your ability to choose which homeschool option to use in South Carolina.

House Bill 3478 would impose state testing on all homeschool students in both the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools (SCAIHS) and all homeschool associations. Additionally, results of the annual review of these organizations by the South Carolina Department of Education would have to be reported to the legislature. Further, these organizations would be required to provide the name of each student being homeschooled to their respective school districts, instead of providing just the number of students being homeschooled as is now required.

But this is not the worst part of this terrible bill. It would eliminate membership in a homeschool association under Section 59-65-47 of the South Carolina Code as an option for homeschooling on July 1, 2014. No longer would South Carolina homeschoolers be able to exercise what is known as the “third option” for complying with the compulsory attendance law.

House Bill 3478 is sponsored by Representatives Norman D. “Doug” Brannon (Dist. 38), Michael A. “Mike” Anthony (Dist. 42), Jenny Anderson Horne (Dist. 94), and Joseph H. Jefferson (Dist. 102). It is currently in the House Education and Public Works Committee. This bill needs to be stopped in its tracks before it gains any momentum.

Members of the House Education and Public Works Committee need to hear from you today!

Action Requested

1. Please call and/or email as many members of the House Education and Public Works Committee as possible with this message or a similar message in your own words:

“Please vote against House Bill 3478, which would unfairly require homeschool students to take the same state tests as public school students. Homeschool students are not instructed using the same curriculum as public school students, yet they would be tested on material they may not have been taught. Even worse, this bill would eliminate membership in a homeschool association as an option for complying with the compulsory attendance law. There is no justification for taking this option away from thousands of law-abiding homeschool families and destroying the livelihood of those who administer these associations.”

House Bill 3478

To All Home Schoolers
On Tuesday, February 5th, Representatives Brannan, Anthony, Horne and Jefferson introduced H3478 in the SC House of Representatives. This bill would require ALL home schoolers to take state approved standardized tests, would require SCAIHS and all third option groups to report NAMES, not numbers, to the Department of Education each year and would eliminate ALL third option groups effective July 1, 2014. The bill is currently in the House Committee on Education & Public Works. If this is a bill that you think should not be passed (!!) please call your representative and let him/her know. Please be polite and calm. You can read the bill for yourself at www.scstatehouse.gov/sess120_2013-2014/bills/3478.htm.

Michelle Huffman update and meals

From Michelle Felver:

Church family and friends,
Michelle will be starting her treatments this next week and will need to be lifted up in prayer. She will have chemo treatments on Tuesdays, and will have radiation Monday-Friday. Yes, that means she will have one day with chemotherapy AND radiation. These treatments are scheduled to last for 5 weeks. During that time pray for
  • her to have strength, to stay hydrated, for the nausea
  • that the treatments would rid her body of the cancer
  • for Ray to have strength to work and take care of everyone,
  • the coordination of getting to and from all of the appointments
  • the kids…

Another way we can minister to this precious family during this trying time is by providing meals for their family. Please visit the link below and sign up to bring a meal for them.

Blessings,
Michelle

3-Day Art Class Coming to CBC in March!

From Kelly McDaniel:

Raise your hand if you are the parent who is supposed to include art with your curriculum but never seem to get around to it after doing math, reading, writing, etc.?  And, what subject do the kids love but we moms never seem to have time for?  ART CLASS, of course!

Good news!  Mr. Barry Stebbing of How Great Thou ART publications is coming to Community Bible Church March 18-20 to teach students ages 5-adult about art.

The course includes teaching the basic fundamentals of beginning drawing and painting, an introduction to art appreciation (studying the great masters), and new techniques in the use of colored markers and colored pencils.

My children and I attended Mr. Stebbing’s class last spring in Charlotte and we all had a great time and learned quite a bit.  Our art skills and knowledge have increased tremendously after taking Mr. Stebbing’s class.

CLASS DETAILS: Class time is 1:00-3:30 pm. March 18-20 at CBC.

Tuition for class is $27.00 per student and includes the entire three days.  (Late registration will be accepted March 1 – 11 and will be $30 per student).

All materials will be provided except colored pencils and colored markers. Each student will need to bring a standard set of colored pencils and markers.

Must pay in advance to reserve your seat. No money collected at the door. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made out to Kelly McDaniel.

For more information or to register please contact Kelly at kellymcdaniel@hargray.com or 843 321-6935.
