Update Chris

Some positive progress today!

I am not sure if my updates have been really coherent for the last few days so let me recap.
Chris has been intubated and on the ventilator since his surgery on Thursday. He is not ready to breathe on his own because of the multiple fractures he has to his ribs. It is a difficult cycle of being sedated because he is in a lot of pain, yet needing him awake so that he can participate in moving around so that he can get his lungs opened up. This is very difficult to do with the kind of injuries he has.
Today he had a procedure done to put in a trach. He is still being ventilated, but through the trach instead of by tube. Although this sounds like a step down, it is actually going to be great for him. There is less likelihood for him to get an infection and he is less uncomfortable because he does not have a tube down his throat. In addition, because he is more comfortable he won’t require as much sedation. That will help him to be awake and alert.  Hopefully that will help him to be able to start regaining some strength and to be able to get up and around.
Yesterday when he sat up on the side of the bed, he was lifted there. He is not yet able to sit up or anything like that on his own yet. I have not spoken with him yet and it will be awhile before he will be able to speak, although he will be able to communicate in other ways.
So prayer requests –
– That he would be as comfortable as possible.
– That he would be able to start moving around and get his lungs opened up.
– That Chris would be able to be weaned off the ventilator.
– That we would be able to come back to Beaufort soon.
Our children are all doing well and are happy at their locations. One has even requested schoolwork! (Nothing like positive peer pressure!)
I am doing much better today. Chris looks a lot better, and I am happier with a plan that is moving forward and not just waiting.
Thank you so much for your continued prayer, support and help. We appreciate it so much.
Love
Charlotte

Update Monday Morning 8-19 – Chris

No real change in status… Chris is resting comfortably and we will be trying again to extubate today. Praying!
Matthew 6:34

Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not by anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 37:7

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.

Update Saturday

Chris is resting comfortably again today. He had a good night.

They are continuing to wean him from the ventilator as a result of his surgery on Thursday. He is still heavily sedated. However, he is initiating all of his own breaths and is just being pressure supported by the vent at this point.
His leg and arm look good and he is very responsive to commands when the doctors check on him.
We are so thankful for the great staff here at MUSC. Please join us in continuing to pray that he will be weaned by Monday and can start the process of rehabbing so we can come home.
The children are all doing great and we are thankful to all of their friends’ parents who have taken them in like their own.
Psalm 70:14-16
But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure. I will come and proclaim your righteousness, your alone.

Update Friday 8-16 – Morning

Chris is resting comfortably this morning. Please pray for the Lord to continue to help him to recover from his injuries. The next few days will be critical as they try to keep him infection free.

There was a very nice story in the Beaufort Gazette this morning by Matt McNab. http://www.islandpacket.com/2013/08/15/2631952/injured-beaufort-police-officer.html

I expect him to continue to be in serious condition for the next several days as he recovers from surgery. Love char

Update 8-15-13 Chris

Psalm 55:22

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous fall………… but as for me, I trust in you.

The doctor came by and the surgery is done. We are thankful that it only took two and half hours. He is now back in the STICU and we are with him. Resting comfortably. THANK YOU for all your prayers… will update in the a.m. Love to all – char

Quick Update

Hey everyone – we are waiting for Chris to go into surgery… he was originally scheduled to go back between 1-1:45 but they are running behind… I will update when he goes back. He is in good spirits and doing well. char

Update Chris Cushman 8-14

Wednesday 14th Update –

We had an action packed day today that left little time for me to sit quietly and check my phone or work on the laptop. It felt nice to be able to do for Chris and to talk with him.

Chris was able to get into the chair today and was able to stay there for an extended period of time. He ate two real meals and is in great spirits.

Today we got a delivery of wonderful cards that people have dropped off at the Police Department. He was so touched by the kind words and thoughts that everyone has sent. Thank you.

Tomorrow he will have surgery. We don’t have a specific time, so please pray for him tomorrow whenever you think of him. Please pray for the hands of the doctors, that they would have wisdom and skill. And also pray that there would be no complications.

We are thankful for all of you and l hope you will join us in casting this burden upon the Lord. (Psalm 55:22)

Love,

Charlotte

KidsLife Program Opportunities

From – Evelyn Owens    cbcevelyn@gmail.com

Checking to see if there are some more moms interested in teaching at our KidsLife program or assisting in some way at Community Bible Church for 11 meetings this school year.
So far we have art classes, P.E., an older girls Bible/life skills study, and a General Science by Apologia class with labs for 6-8 graders.

I welcome any ideas or would be glad to suggest some classes offering any curriculum you may need.

Also teachers/assistants need only to volunteer for half of the morning which is 1 hour and 15 minutes class time.

KidsLife is an accompaniment program for our Woman’s Life Bible study for children ages infant through 8th grade. Woman’s Life meets each 2nd and 4th Wednesday 9:45-12:15 with the exception of Nov. and Dec.

Also if your teens are interested in helping in any way, please e-mail letting me know.

Thanks, Evelyn Owens
