Update Ellie Louise
Thank you so much for praying for little Ellie! We will not be posting updates here on the homeschooling blog anymore.. but if you would like to follow Ellie’s progress further I have started a blog at: http://sensiblemom.wordpress.com/ that you can subscribe to, or you can keep up with us on facebook.
Ellie had a great day yesterday. Her color was good, she rested very comfortably, and generally looked like the model patient!
We covet your prayer today over her being weaned from the ventilator. Breathing is a critical issue for children with Trisomy 18 and it will be the key to whether we can take Ellie home.
For more info about Trisomy 18 see this website: http://www.trisomy.org/
Also she was trembling a lot last night… although she was plenty warm.. so please pray that it is a non-issue and that it is not an indicator of anything.
We have decided to try to put her in a different hat every day to show that each day is new! You will also notice that we have accessorized her blankets!
Love to everyone at home and thanks for all of your calls, texts, messages and notes. If you would like to help with anything, please email Michele Norman at michelenorm@gmail.com. She will be fielding and coordinating all those requests for us.
This weekend will be very busy for us and we may not be able to have any visitors because we expect to have our children come to see us. Next week I think I can handle one visitor a day.
It is a pretty complicated process to get people into the NICU. We can only bring people in one at a time. I will be keeping an appointment book… so that I do not overbook myself. Part of the issue is that I am also pumping my milk for Ellie 6 times a day and that take 30-45 minutes each time. I will say that all of the visitors we have had have been a huge encouragement to us. The Lord has blessed us and strengthened our faith by each of you that have come to see little Ellie. When you see her in person it is so much more evident what a little miracle she is.
We love all of you very much and are so thankful for your love and support. I love seeing all of your comments, texts and messages… so know that I am treasuring them in my heart even if I don’t have a chance to individually respond to them.
Love to you all!

Surgery Update
From Chris & Charlotte Cushman –
Ellie Louise’s surgery was successful today!
Her surgeon was able to connect her esophagus to her stomach and also close the opening that was between her stomach and lungs.
We are PRAISING the Lord for His goodness and thanking all you who have been praying, hoping and thinking about Ellie with us.
We cannot thank you enough for your kind words and help.
Right now we will be waiting for her to heal up as we look toward the next goal of getting off the ventilator.
We will keep you all updated and thank you so much for your love and kindness!
Chris and Charlotte
Update from the Cushman Family on Baby Ellie
1) tracheo esophageal fistula – There is an opening where there should not be between the trachea and the esophagus. The trachea should only be connected to the lungs… and the esophagus should only be connected to the stomach. They need to close up this hole so that her stomach contents do not get into her lungs.2) esophageal atresia – The esophagus is ending in a blind pouch instead of connecting to the stomach. So she has no way to receive nutrition and everything that goes into her mouth comes back up. That is why I had so much excess amniotic fluid… she couldn’t swallow it. The goal is to connect the esophagus to the stomach so that she can get nutrition through to her stomach through her esophagus. They will likely put in a tube of some kind in order to feed her.
- That the surgeons would be skillful.
- That the stomach and esophagus would be close enough to connect.
- That they would be able to close up the hole.
- That she would be able to be weaned from the vent and breathe on her own.
- That we would be able to take her home with us and love her there.
Psalm 121I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip- He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life. The Lord will watach over your coming and going now and forever more.
Classical Conversations
Classical Conversations of Beaufort will be hosting a Fall Open House on Tuesday, October 16th. This Open House is for homeschooling families interested in joining or learning more about our Classical Conversations program. You will be able to observe and participate together with our community during this time. There will also be a time where families can ask any questions they may have regarding our CC program.
We will be hosting an additional Winter Open House, after Christmas if this time in October is not convenient for your family.
Here’s a the specifics of our Classical programs and times:
The Foundations program occurs from 9:00AM-12noon (K4-6th) followed by lunch and playground time outside.
We welcome you to come and see what Classical Conversations is all about and how our mornings together work! Please include with your RSVP the names/ages of your children. Your children are welcome to attend with you. We have a nursery available for 3 years and under. Please plan to bring lunch with you if you as this will enable you to speak with other CC moms in the program during our lunch hour and allow me an opportunity to answer your questions.

Cap & Gown Orders Due by Wednesday Sept 26th
From Terry Beach/Claudia Gay –
The caps and gowns we have on loan from the church are first come first serve……
The prices for the cap, gown and tassel are listed below. Everyone will need to purchase a tassel for the year 2013 but not everyone will need to purchase a cap and gown. There are at least 4 gowns and a cap in the closet at church. If you are interested in borrowing one of them please contact Claudia as soon as possible. Others of you may want to borrow from another family in our church. Please let me know what you want me to order as soon as possible even if it is only a tassel. If you are ordering a gown I will also need to know the height of your son or daughter. I am not sure what the arrangements will be for pictures this year but I do know it is early in the year and the cap, gown and tassel is an important part. If you can let me know no later than Wednesday, Sept. 26 so I can order the gowns. I will need the money before I place the order so I will let you know the date as soon as I set it. It should take about two weeks to get the order back from Jostens. Thanks for your cooperation and getting back with me as quickly as possible.
