Ministry Benefit for East Africa – October 17th – Book Signing

From John and Janie Chitester – Divine Musings

We are hosting a evening event at our home where Gloria Singleton will be signing her newest book, Divine Musings. John and I have laughed, cried and enjoyed this book together so much as we have been reading our way through it. Her insight and ability to pull the scriptures into her writings are great!

We will be receiving part of the proceeds from the book to benefit the ministry in East Africa. We will also have available many art pieces from a local Ugandan artist for sale as well as much African jewelry and a few Rwandan baskets. All the profits from the baskets go to “Bible for Africa”, a project to get bibles into the hands of pastors and their parishioners in Africa.

Below is a formal invite and an article from the Island Packet about our friend and author Gloria Singleton. If you don’t know her yet, I hope you will come out and meet her and preview or buy her book. We will have light refreshments. Mark the date October 17th, Friday night from 7- 830, drop in anytime. Bring your best friend and come! All are welcome!

Blessings,
John and Janie

PUMPKIN PATCH FIELD TRIP/CORN MAZE/HAY RIDE + MORE
WHERE: MADRAC FARMS, 580 Ralph Rahn Rd., RINCON, GA.
WHEN: OCTOBER 16
TIME: 11:00 A.M Sharp
DETAILS: $5.00 PER STUDENT/ADULTS
LUNCH: I’m recommending a sack lunch. They do offer a lunch package, but it must be ordered ahead of time, which will complicate things. You’re welcome to call and order it individually, just tell them you’re with CBCCA homeschooling group.
SIGN -UP: Please email coxfamsc@gmail.com with number of students and adults. Please pay by October 8, call Charles Cox for more information @ 476-6868. Thank you.

Please read the following:
Hay ride—Take a class trip through the deep Georgia Woods and around the corn maze. Takes about 10-15 minutes. Classes will try to be loaded together, depending on size.
Corn maze—About 5 acres this year, not to big, but not to small. We recommend breaking up into groups of 5 and trying to see who can make it through the maze the quickest. Takes about 20 minutes.
Hay Play—There’s nothing more enjoyable for a child than playing around in the hay! Please plan on your children getting dirty.
Animal Feeding— A great learning opportunity for those kids that have never seen a goat, pig, or chicken, except on television. Animal feed is included for each child on fieldtrips. A 5 minute walk from the entrance.
Trip through pumpkin patch—We grow our own, and it’s exciting to see little faces when they realize pumpkins grow from a vine. Children will pick up their pie pumpkin that is included in their visit as they exit the farm, not in the pumpkin patch. (The pie pumpkins don’t grow in South Georgia.) A 5-minute walk from the entrance.
Big Slide—New this year is our big slide. Every child will want to take a ride down the 13-foot slide on a potato sack.
Bouncy house— New this year, a bouncy house is included with all admission.
Coupon for FREE visit for each child—Each child participating in a field trip will receive a coupon to come back to the pumpkin patch for FREE during the 2014 season.
Child sized pumpkin (for children only) – Children only will receive a small pumpkin to take home with them. This pumpkin will be picked up at the Entrance/Exit area, not picked from the pumpkin patch. It makes it much easier so parents and teachers aren’t keeping track of 25 different pumpkins during your visit.
Recommendations: We recommend breaking up into class sizes or even groups of 10 when doing a field trip. A great rotation is Corn Maze, Hay ride, Pumpkin Patch, Animal Feeding, Lunch (if dining with us), Hay Play/Bouncy House/Slide. There will NOT be a Farm employee with you to guide your visit, so it is up to teachers/parents to get your group through the farm. We will have employees stationed at all areas of the farm to answer any questions and to assist you and your staff in any way we can.
Depending on your group size, your visit can vary from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. We recommend bringing and wearing your school ID badges while at the farm and that everyone wears closed-toed shoes.

Charity Sale to benefit Beaufort Youth Orchestra

From Charlotte Cushman –beaufort youth orchestra logo

As you may know, music is an area that homeschoolers often are able to excel. Every year the Beaufort Symphony sponsors a Youth Orchestra, which gives students a wonderful opportunity to experience playing in an orchestra setting under the direction of music professionals.

Our daughter Talley plays cello and is participating for the first time in the Beaufort Symphony Youth Orchestra. This is a non-profit group and in order to raise funds they are participating in a fundraiser called the Belk Charity Sale.

This is a private ticketed event, which will be held on November 8th from 6-10 am. It features 20-70% off storewide including special savings on brands, which are rarely discounted.

If you purchase a ticket for $5.00, you receive $5.00 off your first purchase and entrance into the event.

If you are interested in helping the orchestra and saving money at Belk, please contact Talley at talleycushman@yahoo.com.

Thanks so much!

Marine Master Sgt. George Albert Jackson will Posthumously Receive the Congressional Gold Medal on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Helena Place Senior Living

Retired Marine Master Sgt. George Albert Jackson will posthumously receive the Congressional Gold Medal on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. at Helena Place Senior Living in Port Royal. His widow, Ella J. Jackson, will accept the award for her late husband. The late Master Sgt. Jackson is receiving the honor for being a Montford Point Marine. The Montford Point Marines were among the first African Americans in the United States Marine Corps who overcame racial prejudice to serve in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, paving the way for full racial integration of the U.S. Marine Corps. He volunteered to enter the Marine Corps on June 22, 1942.

In 1942, Montford Point Camp was established as the World War II recruit training site for all African American Marines. At its height, approximately 20,000 Marines walked through the camp’s gate to attend recruit training. It wasn’t until 1949 that President Harry Truman issued executive order 9981, which effectively ended segregation in the military. Master Sgt. Jackson retired on March 31, 1969. Following his service, Master Sgt. Jackson became a founding member of the Montford Point Marine Association, Inc., Beaufort chapter and sat as vice president in 1973. The Montford Point Marine Association, Inc., a non-profit veteran organization, was founded in 1965 to memorialize the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps.

The Congressional Gold Medal is the nation’s highest civilian honor. It is awarded to persons who have performed achievements that have had an impact on American history that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient’s field long after the achievement. It is not to be confused with the Medal of Honor, which is the nation’s highest military honor.

The late retired Master Sgt. Jackson served in the U.S. Army prior to joining the Marine Corps. He served in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. A native of Long Island, NY, he died on July 18, 1987 and is interred at Beaufort National Cemetery. In addition to his widow Ella, age 93, several other family members and members of the Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. will attend the ceremony.

A buffet luncheon will follow the award presentation at Helena Place Senior Living, 1624 Paris Ave., Port Royal, SC 29935. The public is invited to attend this prestigious awards ceremony and reception. Please call (843) 252-3001 or e-mail rewing@enlivant.com with questions.

Homeschool Fridays Return for the New School Year

HC’s Homeschool Fridays Return for the New School Year

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Aug. 19, 2014)—Historic Columbia invites all homeschool students to enjoy hands-on activities while learning and exploring different themes and historic sites at Homeschool Fridays, held on the first Friday of each month.

The Homeschool Friday schedule this fall includes:

Sept. 5 | History of Media in Columbia and Richland County

Meet in the Gift Shop at Robert Mills, 1616 Blanding St.

Students will explore the rich media history of Columbia and Richland County including early newspapers, radio, and television stations. Topics will include yellow journalism, the assassination of The State’s founder by a lieutenant governor, and samples from newspapers that have operated in Columbia. From The Columbia Gazette in 1794 to ColaDaily.com, students will see how information has been communicated to Richland County’s residents throughout history.

Oct. 3 | Mourning Customs of the 19th Century

Meet in the Gift Shop at Robert Mills, 1616 Blanding St.

Students will discover how people in the 19th century mourned the loss of a loved one. Women were expected to observe certain mourning customs such as covering mirrors in a black cloth, wearing dark clothing and black jewelry, and even children wore a black ribbon around their arm. The students will also make their own “hair wreath,” a common practice to remember a loved one.

Nov. 7 | Woodrow Wilson’s Presidency

Meet at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home, 1705 Hampton St.

The lasting effects of President Woodrow Wilson’s decisions as this nation’s leader continue to be felt today. This program will explore his work as president including the creation of the Federal Reserve to stabilize the banking system, his leadership in World War I, and the passage of the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote.

Dec. 5 | Main Street Tour

Meet at the South Carolina State House at the intersection of Gervais and Main streets.

Main Street, or Richardson Street as it was originally called, is the most architecturally diverse area of Columbia today. From 19th-century two-story brick buildings to the newest office towers, Main Street’s prosperity has grown and declined over the city’s history. On a walking tour from the State House to the Tapp’s building, students will see the first mall on Main Street, bank vaults, movie theaters, and former department stores as they learn how building uses have changed and how Main Street is being revived.

Historic Columbia’s Homeschool Friday programs are $5 per student and open to all homeschool students of elementary and middle school age levels, and reservations are suggested. To reserve a spot or get more information, visit historiccolumbia.org, email jquint@historiccolumbia.org or call 803-252-1770 ext. 36.

About Historic Columbia:

In November 1961, a small group of individuals intent on saving the Ainsley Hall House from demolition officially incorporated as the Historic Columbia Foundation. Over the next five decades the organization, which was founded on the premise of preservation and education, would take on the stewardship of seven historic properties in Richland County. Today, the organization serves as a model for local preservation efforts and interpretation of local history. Maxwell Conference September 25th

From Phillips Family –maxwell family
Dear Fellow Home Educators~

Are you looking forward to the new school year?  Do you feel the need to be energized in your homeschool journey?  Would you love to begin each day with joy and anticipation?

Come for an evening of encouragement and equipping as Mr. & Mrs. Steve Maxwell and family of Titus2.com share practical, yet life-changing, truths from God’s Word in their various NEW sessions.  Mr. & Mrs. Maxwell, homeschooling parents since 1985 and authors of over a dozen books, have successfully raised their eight children to adulthood without the heartbreak of rebellion.  Our family has been blessed by their Biblical teaching on homeschooling and family life.  Please join us for this FREE conference on Thursday, September 25th from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. at The Fellowship Assembly of God (5224 Augusta Road; Savannah, GA 31408).  For more information, view the attached flyer.  If you would like to attend, please call (540-798-2165) or email (basmile4jesus@gmail.com) us.

We would love to share this information with the homeschool families in your group.  May you please forward this information to your members and post it on your web site and Facebook account?  I attached the Maxwell’s family picture and a brief overview of the conference to help with publicity.  I would be grateful if you could let me know if you are able to help!

If you desire to learn answers to questions such as: How can I instill in my children a heart for Jesus?, How do I encourage my children to be motivated to be used of the Lord in whatever situation they are in?, Is it possible for me to accomplish all that is necessary in each day?, How can I teach my children to be productive?; then you definitely do not want to miss this opportunity.

“As for God, his way is perfect” (Psalm 18:30).

May the Lord richly bless each of you!

All for Jesus~
