Drivers Ed
Dave Adams, the athletic director at Bluffton High, has been working with homeschoolers for many years teaching drivers ed and wanted me to pass along his email address for anyone that wants to take the class. He said you get a discount on your insurance for taking the class. The cost is $325. dave.adams@beaufort.k12.sc.us

Island Playground is Awesome!
Just wanted to let everyone know about Island Playground.
We brought Hart for his birthday and it was SUCH a great time! They have discounts for homeschoolers and 13 and over are free!
I personally LOVED going down the slide. Also wi-fi and places for moms to chat. Definitely going to set up a play date in Bluffton for homeschooling moms soon! http://island-playground.com/
The other thing that rocked is that now we know where CBC-Bluffton meets! And if you come I bet you will see some Lawsons running around:)
National Engineers Week
Engineers and computer scientists innovate, create and solve problems. They work together to make the world better. They are key to our healthy, safety and happiness. When children and teens get to experience engineering and computer science, they realize how interesting and fun these professions can be. That’s why the National Engineers Week Foundation – and the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at the University of South Carolina – are dedicated to attracting and cultivating the next generation of engineers and computer scientists.
National Engineers Week, which celebrates professionals in all fields of engineering and computing, will be held February 16-22. With help from our sponsors URS Corporation, the CEC is hosting a week of activities including guest speakers, a Code-A-Thon for USC students (sponsored by Boeing IT), and an Open House geared toward kindergarten through 12th grade students.
The Open House will be held on Saturday, February 22 from 10am – 1pm at the Swearingen Engineering Center at 315 Main Street on the USC Columbia campus. The free event will feature dozens of interactive exhibits that highlight the CEC’s programs and research including the following:
A helicopter landing Fuel cell demonstrations Electric and hybrid vehicles
A concrete canoe Robots Computer Games Segway Rides Lab tours
Visit from Cocky
For a full list of activities, visitwww.cec.sc.edu/eweek.Visitors, of all ages, are welcome, as are school groups.
The speakers series will feature experts on the gender wage gap and the growing rolls of women in engineering and computing. To register for these free seminars, visit www.cec.sc.edu/eweek.

Classical Conversations
We are hitting that season where families are beginning to think about schooling options for next year. Are you considering home schooling your child {ren}?
We would love to share with you how Classical Conversations comes alongside families who are interested in educating their children Classically and with a Biblical worldview.
While there are many benefits of being part of a CC Community – here are two that stand out in my mind today:
Community: meeting weekly with families who are in the same season of life as your family and making many of the same choices for their children. Moms who need encouragement will find other moms who can help share from what we have learned or seek guidance from other moms. Children are encouraged in peer relationships that build confidence in getting in front of their class weekly to speak on a topic, practice their memory work and engage in lively games together.
Simplifies your home educating time: one of my families greatest blessings has been this area. With three children in three different levels, it is beyond simplifying that they are all learning the same memory work each week. We are able to bring this home by all doing the same history, science, Timeline and more. Each child will need their own reading and math help – but what a gift to have our whole family following the same core curriculum at one time.
If you are interested in learning more about Classical Conversations here in Beaufort, here are a couple of ways you can dig deeper:
Attend an Open House: our first Open House for 2014 is scheduled for this Tuesday, January 21. You and your children can come and participate in a morning of CC and experience it for yourself. Please let me know if you are interested in signing up to attend this practical and fun morning.
Come to an Information Meeting: also this week on Thursday January 23 at 6:30pm we will be hosting an Informational Meeting at Shell Point Baptist Church {Parris Island Gateway right across from Bi-Lo} This Thursday, we’ll especially be exploring Essentials {our 4-6th grade writing/grammar program} and Challenge {our 7-12 grade programs.} Everyone is welcome and I will be happy to share about Foundations {age 4-6th grade} at that time as well.
For more information or to schedule a visit, please reach out to me at mohummingbird@hotmail.com.
