Young Marines
From Sheryl –
YOUNG MARINES
The Young Marines: This is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the focal point for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts.
Young Marines units are community-based programs led by dedicated adult volunteers. Many of these volunteers are former, retired, active duty, or reserve Marines who believe passionately that the values they learned as Marines had a positive effect on them. It is through these caring adults that Young Marines learn the inner values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Adult volunteers are individually screened by the National Headquarters based on background information and recommendations provided with each person’s registration.
The Young Marine curriculum includes the following topics:
. Close Order Drill
. Essential Subjects to include uniform regulations, grooming standards, rank structure, customs and courtesies, military jargon, awards, and Young Marine history
. Field Skills (camping skills)
. Map and Compass
. Drug Resistance
. Public Speaking
. Leadership
. Citizenship
. Physical Fitness, Health, and First Aid
The Parris Island Young Marines also have fun. We have games, swim days, occasional camp outs, parade participation, Obstacle Course, Confidence Course, Rappelling, Gun Safety and Marksmanship at the ISMT, the Young Marine Birthday Ball celebration, overnighters, and longer trips like our week long trip to Washington DC this summer.
To become a Young Marine a youth must participate in a 25-hour Basic Training. These occur twice a year, one in the spring and one in the fall; they cover five hours on five consecutive Saturdays from 0900 until 1400. (9am until 2pm). Our usual meetings go from 0900 until 1200 on Saturdays.
Initial registration fee is $210.00 with the following breakdown:
. $20.00 to National HQ
. $60.00 to the Unit
. $130.00 for uniforms and guide book
If your child is interested in joining the Young Marines or if you are interested in volunteering please contact Del Tingley (Unit Commander of Parris Island Young Marines) at delroy.d.tingley@usmc.mil or call 985-640-0904.

Spanish Curriculum Needed
From Becky –
I am looking for a Spanish curriculum for beginners. My 13 year old has had Spanish classes before and my 8 year old is interested in learning. Wondering if there is something out there that I can use for both of them. If anyone has any good ideas or curriculum to borrow or buy I would appreciate it.
